What Are Running Splits?

A split is the time it takes to complete a specific segment of a race, usually measured per kilometer or per mile. Tracking splits helps you maintain your target pace and avoid going out too fast or too slow.

Even, Negative, and Positive Splits

  • Even splits — Running each segment at approximately the same pace. This is the most efficient strategy for most runners.
  • Negative splits — Running the second half faster than the first. Recommended for experienced runners who want to finish strong.
  • Positive splits — Running the first half faster than the second. Common among beginners who start too fast.

Which Strategy Should You Choose?

For most runners, even splits are the safest bet. If you're experienced and disciplined, negative splits can yield personal bests. Positive splits are generally not recommended as a deliberate strategy, but this planner lets you prepare for it if that's how your race typically unfolds.
